Impactful service learning is a cornerstone of the Cary Academy experience. BackPack Buddies a program of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle feeds children from food-insecure homes in the seven-county area surrounding the Triangle. Addressing childhood hunger has long been an aim of sixth grade service learning. In North Carolina one in five kids under the age of 18 does not have enough to eat making our state one of the highest in the country for child food insecurity. BackPack Buddies allows a group of Joyner children in need to take home some basic food.

Our INITIATIVES are designed to fill in the gaps on weekends and at home. Backpack Buddies is part of Inter-faith food Shuttle. Every week SAPC supports about 40 children at River Bend Elementary by delivering enough food for a weekend.

This program provides a healthy supplement to weekend meals for children of low-income families. BackPack Buddies provides children from food-insecure homes with healthy weekend meals during the school year. School-aged children selected by their principal guidance counselor or after-school program receive a package containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks at the end of every week during the traditional school year. Backpack Buddies ensures that these children are fed on the weekends because hunger does not take the weekend off. Every Friday each of these children receive a bag of food for the weekend.

INTER-FAITH FOOD SHUTTLES CHILD HUNGER INITIATIVES FOCUS ON MEETING THE NUTRITIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN IN TIMES WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle is an incredible nonprofit organization that fights every day to provide food for North Carolinians who struggle with frequent regular food insecurity. For years the sixthgrade team has partnered with Interfaith Food Shuttle and Reedy Creek Elementary School for the Backpack.

Some of these children are homeless come from a single family home or their families just need a little help. The Backpack Buddies program exists to provide 10-12 pounds of food for each child in need over the weekend. Unfortunately when school year ends supplemental programs are needed to help fill in the gaps.

During the last school year the Food Shuttle delivered 1700 bags each week to 52 schools in Wake County. Join Mix 1015 and the Interfaith Food Shuttle on Wednesday 13th July to help stop child hunger. We collected 10 new backpacks and 402 total pounds of food.

BackPack Buddies provide nutritious and easy-to-prepare food so children dont go hungry when school is out on weekends. MIX staffers collected non-perishable food items and backpacks at various locations in the Triangle during the day-long event while monetary donations are collected online.
